This is a very large and intriguing, late 19th century oil painting on canvas. The picture appears to be the famous biblical scene of Daniel in the Lions Den. This painting has a lavish interior scene with an oriental influence. Interesting details and bright, vibrant, rich colors throughout. The canvas is signed by the artist (indiscernible) in the lower right hand corner. (see photo) Possibly reads, "McClan" or "McClain". The canvas of this fascinating oil painting has been re-stretched. The painting is in excellent original condition, but appears to have a clear coat of varnish and there is one tiny tear in the canvas on the lions whiskers that has been taped from the back. The painting has a slightly crazed finish throughout and a small hazy spot on the right side. The issues above do not detract from the overall appearance. This beautiful painting is in its original, decorative, and very elaborate fancy floral gesso wood frame. The frame retains its original old gold finish. Some age-appropriate wear. Old wire hanger. Circa 1890‘s. *Additional photos available upon request. |
